Finback Coasted Toconut

July 2, 2014

I didn’t know Finback existed until a couple of months ago, probably because they only just started releasing their drafts in January. Yet, despite only having (I believe) local distribution these guys are regularly blowing my mind with very enjoyable beers. The other night, despite the fact that I can go either way on coconut I was very excited to try their Coasted Toconut. A stout brewed, quite clearly, with toasted coconut.

This beer looks and smells fantastic. Perfect pitch black stout color with a thin mocha head that sits right on top without being too foamy or disappearing in an instant. Chocolate and cream form the backbone of the scent but then that coconut creeps in, tantalizing you ever so slightly. On top of all that, the beer is surprisingly light, with a smooth milky mouthfeel.

Sweet coconut flavor hits you from the get go along with a strong taste of milk chocolate that pairs wonderfully with the coconut. The beer ends with a warm finish that has a perfect bittersweet balance that keeps the beer from being overpoweringly sweet. This beer is exactly what’s on the tin, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Seriously, if the chocolates with coconut in them that ruin every chocolate box tasted like this, I probably wouldn’t stop eating them.

Beer after beer, Finback is proving they know what they’re doing and I wish them all the success in the world.
