Hoppin’ Frog Frosted Frog

January 17, 2014

Even though it might currently feel like a cold early spring in New York City, we are still in the depths of winter and I’m certain that Mother Nature will be reminding us of that very soon. Therefore, there’s no reason not to talk about the dark and spicy beers that are designed to keep you warm on those cold wintry nights.

Hoppin’ Frog is an Ohio brewery that has yet to really disappoint me, and they’re quickly making their way toward my trusted brewery list. For the winter months they release a nice winter warmer appropriately named the Frosted Frog. The beer itself is a clear mahogany color with a light whitish head. The scent is something I can only really describe as ‘Christmas,’ that wonderful mixture of cinnamon, ginger, molasses, and a touch of booze. The body is surprisingly light and the beer is overall very smooth, making it very easy to drink.

A light sweetness composed of a wonderful combination of sugar and molasses starts everything off. A bready center provides a point for the other flavors to hang off as a blend of winter spices like ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg makes its way through your mouth. There is a hint of nuts to keep things interesting before the whole thing comes to a wonderfully spiced finish that is sure to keep you warm.

This is a beer definitely worth keeping around for when the snow is falling and the temperature is dropping.
