Stone Smoked Porter

May 29, 2013

Stone Brewing is a brewery you are most likely familiar with. While far from the oldest craft brewery, having only been founded 17 years ago, they are probably one of the fastest growing if not the fastest growing brewer in the country. This success comes from their bold flavors, delicious beers, and of course, the famed Arrogant Bastard. The beer that someone will push into your hands one day and insist that you must love if you like beer because the bottle says so. As I’ve said time and time again, screw the Arrogant Bastard and get yourself pretty much anything else that they brew.

The Stone Smoked Porter, for example, is a beer of rich mahogany coloring with a fluffy brown tinted head. With its scent of dark chocolate with a hint of hops, it promises a unique but tasty drinking experience. It’s fairly smooth, with a clean and fresh mouthfeel despite its darker and stronger flavors.

The beer comes at you with a slight chocolate taste that gives way to a big smoky malt flavor. The beer ends on spicy hops and a lingering cocoa bitterness that help to evoke the smokier notes of the beer. When you down a gulp of it, you’ll feel like you’re releasing smoke from a somewhat weak but ultimately tasty cigar.

I really found myself both liking and disliking this beer. I enjoyed my pint of it, yet at the same time I didn’t feel like I was getting a lot out of it, it was merely what it said on the tin and after ten or twelve ounces I was just sort of waiting for it to be over. If you’re a fan of smoked beers, it’s definitely exactly what you’re looking for. If you’re just looking for something a little interesting, it might not be worth the full pour but it’s definitely worth the taste.
