Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout

May 3, 2013

Ah, Founders is such a wonderful brewery. It’s hard to believe that they were once on the verge of bankruptcy before turning their whole operation. They changed their focus from standard brews, to beers that were meant to appeal to people who wanted something bolder. I personally think the Kentucky Breakfast Stout, an amazing stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels.

This beer is dark, not only does it pour a pitch black color but its head is practically coffee colored. This smells like my kind of breakfast, scents of chocolate, bourbon, and charred wood mix together for something amazing. The KBS is full bodied and creamy, just a perfect combination for a beer like this.

A rich coffee flavor is the first thing that hits your tongue, followed quickly by chocolate hints that make for a great mocha-like flavor. These flavors mix with the oak, which lends a nice vanilla flavor to the brew just like it can with some bourbons. Finally, the beer comes to a close with a strong bourbon finish.

This is definitely a beer that if you can get your hands on it, it’s well worth it.
