Allagash Vrienden

It’s never a problem to be talking about Allagash beer too much. One of my favorite East Coast breweries, they’re one of the few breweries that can get me excited for a beer brewed with weird yeast strains. That’s why I was intrigued the other week when I had a chance to have their Vrienden, a name I still have no idea how to pronounce (and Allagash has yet to tweet back at me about it), which is an American wild ale. Wild ales are generally brewed with strains of yeast which are wild, in other words cultivated from growth on various other plant species with little to no control or precision in which strains are cultivated. Wild yeast can be a little unpredictable but generally adds a little sour or sweet flavor to beers.

The Vrienden poured a clear amber color with a fluffy white head that lingered for a time. The scent was one of rich fresh cut green apples, and a light hint of sweet/sour yeasty goodness. It is exceedingly light in your mouth, not so light that you feel like you’re drinking nothing at all but light enough that it is extremely pleasant and easy to drink.

As could be expected, this brew is extremely fruity. It hits you with a mixture of tart berries, general sour fruit flavor, and a distinct taste of green apples. There is a maltiness to the brew that does a lot to help balance it. Somehow, either through some barely perceptible hop or malt flavor, the beer actually manages to end on a very dry and welcome finish.

In the end, this is definitely a beer worth giving a taste if you can get your hands on it.
